There is a story about the pierrot which relates how a small naked boy was found outside the gates of Heaven. It was winter, and as St Peter picked up the child and blessed him, the snow on his body turned into a suit of pure white clothing. St Peter adopted the child and gave him his own name - Little Peter or Pierrot - but there was one condition, Pierrot was not to be allowed to play with any of the human children he might come across as he wandered outside the gates of Paradise. Of course, this was almost impossible for a small boy, and on his return from just such a meeting he realised that his white suit now had black marks on it where the ordinary children had touched him. They proclaimed his guilt, and Pierrot was excluded from Paradise forevermore. from Wikipedia [link]

I know! I was looking up his history and I found that. Not at all the happy little clown. :(

Thank you for relating the story, I had not heard that one.

As to a happy lil clown, then that is something Pierrot has never been, at least not in classical commedia dell'arte. His role is one of a sad romantic young man/lover, someone always poetic and wondering, and either lonesome or just plain sad, not very witty, but hansome. Often he is in love with the cheery maid Colombe that pays little or no attention to him, or just mocks his bardic attempts to court her.

Actually, I looked it up, because I though that was the story, too, and it turns out that Harlequin is classical commedia dell'arte. He's the one who is typically in love with Columbina, Columbe, Columbine. Pierrot was a sad, child-like character, while Harlequin was a lover and a prankster, famed for his agility.
It was really interesting reading, especially as I'd always thought that they were one and the same.

Okay....now I have to look up and revise again, since the stuff I told was pretty much what I've been taught in my lectures....

God dammit, I'll kick some ass when they were wrong...

lol

What I read was in Wikipedia. I'm pretty sure the characters have sort of melded together over time. I read that historians claim Harlequin has existed in story for four thousand years, while Pierrot's been around, maybe, three or hour hundred. The clearest difference, though, is in costume. Harlequin wears a diamond pattern while Pierrot is in white.

Let me know what you find out. Wikipedia was my only resource, and I'm sure there are other explanations.
